Structure and Materials

Cryogenic liquid storage tanks usually adopt a double-layer structure. The inner tank is used to hold cryogenic liquids, while the outer tank plays a role in protection and heat insulation. The space between the inner and outer tanks is filled with high-performance thermal insulation materials, such as vacuum powder or multi-layer insulation materials, to reduce heat transfer and liquid evaporation. The inner tank is mostly made of stainless steel or aluminum alloy. These materials have good low-temperature toughness and corrosion resistance, and can withstand pressure changes at extremely low temperatures. The outer tank is usually made of carbon steel or stainless steel to provide structural support and external protection.

Thermal Insulation Performance

Thermal insulation is the core characteristic of cryogenic liquid storage tanks. Since cryogenic liquids are extremely prone to evaporation when heated, the thermal insulation design of the storage tank directly affects the storage time and economy of the liquid. Common thermal insulation methods include high-vacuum insulation, multi-layer reflective screen insulation and powder insulation. These methods can significantly reduce heat conduction and convection, keeping the liquid in a low-temperature state. For example, the daily evaporation rate of some storage tanks can be controlled at a low level, which means that the liquid can be stored for a long time without frequent replenishment.

Safety Features

Safety is an important consideration in the design of cryogenic liquid storage tanks. Storage tanks are usually equipped with multiple safety devices, such as pressure relief valves, explosion-proof discs and liquid level gauges. The pressure relief valve can automatically exhaust when the internal pressure is too high to prevent the tank from bursting; the explosion-proof disc serves as a backup safety measure to protect in extreme cases. The storage tank is also equipped with a temperature monitoring and alarm system to monitor the internal state in real time and ensure safe operation.
